Oregon Summer 2011: Smith Rock

We went on two big adventures while we were in Central Oregon for Papa & Nana's vow renewal; white water rafting on the Deschutes and hiking Smith Rock. There is no photo proof of our rafting trip, you'll just have to take our word for it. We had a blast! And our raft totally rocked, way more than the other rafts (too bad half of our group had to be in one of the less awesome rafts, we can't all win the day though). This was our first time to Smith Rock, but most of the rest of our group had been before and knew what to expect. We really should have gone earlier in the day because it got so hot so quick, as it was we started about 9am and we were overheating before we made it to the top. Of course, we decided to go up the hard way and come back down the easy way so we had our all of our eagerness and gusto on our side. The other benefit to that strategy is that we got to hike down on the shady side of the mountain. And the river was a nice reprieve for our tired feet.

ready to conquer that rock

look how grown up everyone has gotten!

such a beautiful, clear sky

so many stairs

made it to the top!

love the trees in this part of the world

looking like true Oregonians

we started out waaaaay down there in that parking lot

T had a migraine, she was pretty stoked to have made it up in one piece

Monkey Face

J went off the beaten path, to the tippy tippy top (and took a camera man)

now to hike down there...

check out the climber over T's shoulder, he was suspended there and swinging like he wasn't about 300 ft above the ground

the path down was steep

its a bit icy, but feels so good to our aching toesies

Winning! ("This is how I pose on rocks.")
