The Ten Month Mark

The C Man is inching ever closer to that one year mark! Its one of those bittersweet moments in time that come increasingly often since we became parents, where we simultaneously rejoice at his amazing growth and want to weep that he's not still a newborn baby. Its really been a wondrous time watching him change lately. He has acquired many new tricks recently: waving, clapping, dancing, talking with more authority. Oh, and he's also started WALKING...no big deal.Waving: he started out by waving to himself in the mirror, then when greeting people, then he moved on to waving bye-bye (traditionally the first step in the waving process, but he's a non-traditional kinda guy) and now he's waving without any verbal prompting.
Clapping: he has been a big fan of clapping for quite awhile now, but he's been slow to do it himself. He liked to sit on mama's lap and hold her hands while she clapped. Now he happily claps all on his own, and he never fails to be delighted by this.

Dancing: we were starting to think that C might be the one musically indifferent member of the family. But it turns out we just hadn't found his type yet; as soon as we played the New Orleans Playground CD for him he started dancing his little socks off! It unleashed the beast and now we have another music loving, dancing machine in the house. He gets so into it, too: bopping up and down and shaking his head all around.

(this is one of the songs on his favorite CD)

Talking: he said "mama" and "dada" months ago, but very rarely (if ever) with any clear intent. This past month he's been pointing and grunting with the evident expectation that we will understand what he wants and fulfill his need/desire. Not long after that he started saying our names and meaning it! Its the most amazing, fuzzy feeling to hear your children ask for you. Makes my heart swell just typing about it.

Walking: he began by trying to cut corners when walking along our couch (a sectional, so there are two corners he can gap among the three sections). Then he realized that he could walk/push their wooden cart across the room, which he successfully did on the first try. The next day he just walked away from the couch...four steps. There's no wobbling and falling involved with this guy either. He takes steps with confidence, and if he loses balance he regains it enough to remain standing for a bit or goes into a very controlled sit. The most we've counted so far is six steps. He's not very into holding our hands to walk longer distances, he'd rather walk on his own or crawl. He's usually on a mission, not really walking for the sake of walking. He's all business.

And he's finally eating real food now, and giving his mama a much needed break. He will pretty much try anything and everything all of a sudden (especially if someone else is eating it). True to what we're learning about his personality, he can't be forced into anything he doesn't want to do and he has no problem following his own inner time line.

Its also very nice to see him and his big sis B play together and get along so well. They seem to genuinely care about one another and treat each other with respect.Since he's making it quite clear that he can do just about anything he puts his mind to, we are very excited to see what new trick we'll find him doing next!

Yosemite: check!

Yay! We get to check off the first item on our list of things to see in our area. It was a quick and semi-impromptu trip inspired by our Aussie friends who are on a five week road trip around the U.S. They invited us to camp with them while they were at the national park and we leaped at the chance. It was about a three and a half hour drive from here, which was really easy on Sunday morning going there, a bit more of a drag mid-morning on Monday on our way home. It was B and C's first camping trip and they did much better than expected...well, we really didn't have any expectations, but they did very well. B absolutely loved everything about it: running, jumping, getting dirty. And she slept wonderfully in her new pink sleeping bag (well, at about sunrise T awoke to a B sized finger in her face and the complaint of an owie, but that problem was quickly dispatched with a Mama Kiss and B fell right back to sleep). C was wonderful all day, but had trouble sleeping under such unusual circumstances. It certainly didn't help that he was awoken by the first light of the day shining through the tent, try as he might he just couldn't ignore it and continue sleeping. Happily, his rough night did not have any negative effects on his attitude once out and about.

We didn't get to see or do nearly as much as we would have liked, so another trip will definitely occur (probably next summer, in addition to a winter trip at some point). But we did hike into a sequoia grove, drive the entire loop of the Yosemite Valley (including an area clearly marked "authorized vehicles only") and climbed our way up to the base of Bridal Veil Falls at sunset. C had to sit that last one out, but between J and our friend Grant, B was able to go as far as any of us. It was beautiful and we had a wonderful time with great friends.

These are just a few highlights of the trip. See more photos here.

Growing our brains.

T starts grad school in two weeks and she's getting nervous, but overall is very excited. She's not the only one taking classes this fall! B will be going to "school" for the very first time, well sort of. She'll be taking an art class every Tuesday and a French class every Thursday.

She's been going a little stir crazy at home and now that C is old enough to be out and about without driving his mama nutso, we're finally letting her stretch her little wings. Both classes require parent participation, but T has talked to the instructors and its fine with them if C tags along (can anyone say two for one French lessons?). T's also hoping to take them to the library's story time once a week.

Going from leaving the house once a work week for Friday lunches to having something to do every day but Monday will be a big change. We have a strong feeling that it will make both children much happier and will bring down the number of meltdowns and time outs per day.

You're in my heart!

B has been telling us that we're in her heart, and it instantly melts us to mush. This is where she got it, and we are so happy.

A New List

While we were driving (and driving and driving) back from Oregon we would occasionally blurt out a local destination we are interested in visiting some vague weekend in the not too distant future. Also on this long trip of ours we discussed the recent life decisions of friends and the mystery of the future and the fun in not knowing for sure what lies just beyond the bend...because it could be some grand adventure! We really don't know what lies ahead for us, we can dream and devise all we want, but the truth is that the Master Plan will remained unrevealed until the last possible moment. All we know for sure is that we will be right here, in the Bay Area, for the next year and a half. And with that in mind we set about making a list of all the places we want to see while we live here. You can appease your curiosity by scrolling down a bit and looking to the left; you will find a new list called "Places we will see." And don't worry, we'll be sure to blog about each one as soon as we cross it off!

PDI Babies might be the cutest.

The Friday before we left on our big trip, there was an epic PDI Character TD Babies photo shoot at J's work. There are a lot of two and under munchkins in the mix and a couple photographically inclined coworkers thought it would be fun to capture the joy and chaos.

Oregon, how we love thee!

We spent last week in our favorite state enjoying family, friends and all the green and tax free shopping we could absorb in nine days. The official reason for the trip was J and T's 10 year high school reunion, but of course we went to see all of our loved ones. Visiting our old stomping grounds felt pretty good too. We tried leaving at night this time, which worked pretty well on our way up to Oregon. We stopped in Eugene to visit the Fitzpatrick clan and to stay with Uncle Dev & Aunt Jennifer (we missed cousin Julia, but had lots of fun with cousins Jax and Hayley).B and C loved playing on Gramma & Grampa's farm with all the "sheep" (even though they don't actually have any sheep...goats and a donkey, but good luck convincing B of that).B went out on her first boating adventure with Daddy, and Rory even let her drive the boat. We're missing the Moores a lot, especially because B and Hayden make the cutest little set of besties we've ever seen.
Spending time with Uncle Dustin and Auntie Jess reminded us all of the good old days.
There were a lot of playmates at Papa & Nana's to keep us busy (Uncle Tony, Aunt Shelly & Uncle Ralph, cousins Taylor and Grant).
We spent a wonderful Friday in our favorite city, enjoying the zoo with Kim and Trevin and then lunch with some of J's Laika cohorts. The shopping was good and we had a nice visit with the soon to be Londoners, but always Aussie Grant and Clare. Poor T was ill with a mommy affliction the second half of the trip (mastitis) and tried to hold strong but caved on Sunday and so we left earlier than planned. We ended up having to stop and sleep at a motel in Medford, so we didn't even get home any earlier on Monday, but we tried our best.

Thanks to everyone who fed and housed us on our journey. We love you all and are so happy to have spent the time with you.
