Cleanse: Week One Down

J is feeling better than ever after one week of the cleanse. The first few days were very rough without his usual caffeination, but he pushed through. It is a little more challenging at home with T bailing out and eating outside the restrictions of the cleanse, but he's holding strong. We're still making the vegan/gluten free meals for dinner and there are plenty of options at work for him.

Warm Potato Salad w/ Cherry Tomatoes - two thumbs up

Chipotle Kissed Black Bean Soup - one thumb up (after adding avocado & soy sour cream), one thumb won't even go near it

* Which brings us to the Chipotle story: turns out chipotles are so much hotter than we realized! The recipe called for one or two cans and T only got one thinking that she's not so much into the spice, but one can and J could hardly eat it. And T did not realize that she should be wearing gloves while mincing the peppers and consequently got horrible burns all over her hand. She says it was pain worse than labor; we tried everything...cold water, hot water, ice, milk, orange juice, antihistamine, scrubbing with soap and a nail brush. Everything seemed to only make it worse. Oddly, rubbing alcohol seemed to help the most. Finally, after three and half hours of excruciating pain (and seriously contemplating going the the ER) she was exhausted enough to fall asleep. It was still slightly swollen and stung a little in the morning, but by afternoon she was healed. Did we mention she had an open cut on one of her fingers...OUCH! She won't go near the soup now and is a little gun-shy in the kitchen for fear the capsaicin piperine oil is still lingering on some surface waiting to attack her.
